What is it about the Holidays?

Why is it that only during the Holidays we make such an effort to get together with family and friends. It seems like the most hectic time of year to squeeze in a party every other night. Why don't we make this same effort throughout the year?

Here is an idea; Keep the celebration rolling and book a river trip for the 2009 season. Our customers unanimously agree, there is no better place to relax and spend time with your family and friends than on Idaho's Salmon River.

I know, I know...... with the economy in the dumps who can afford a rafting vacation? It is more reasonable than you might think. Hell, make me deal. After all, it is the season for giving......

Make it a fun & Safe Holiday Season.

Cheers,

Jared & the SAC crew

I almost forgot.......

please...please...please pray for snow.

Summer in Stanley

Stanley, Idaho could very well be the best summer destination in the Rocky Mountain West. When the inter-mountain west is hovering around 100 degrees, Stanley is regularly the coolest place in the US. The cool temps and sunny skies are the perfect ingredients for electric green foliage and an amazing display of wildflowers. Not to mention perfect temps for long hikes, mountain trail rides, and epic single track adventures.

Rafting in Sun Valley and Stanley, Idaho

Update for the Salmon River in Stanley, Idaho:

The past few weeks have been unseasonably cold in Stanley. It is June 9th and there is snow in the forecast. Its hard to want to float the river when it is 40 degrees and raining. The weather finds the guides grumpy, thank goodness for hot springs or they might all go mad.
The guides are anxiously waiting for the switch from Spring too Summer and it looks to be on the doorstep. The abnormally cold spring has kept the snow in the mountains, which is great news for the 2008 rafting season! With ample snow in the mountains and a slow run-off I predict we will see the best summer rafting conditions the Salmon river has seen in over a decade.
Head up to Stanley this summer and join us for a day of Idaho rafting at its best. Hope to see you soon.

2008 SAC Training Trip: Bruneau River

Each Spring Sawtooth Adventure Company hosts an employee training trip to prepare for the upcoming season. This year SAC explored the Bruneau River, an oasis in the enormous desert of SE Idaho. The Bruneau was full of surprising discoveries, from the huge whitewater to the picture-prefect campsites to the four-foot high poison ivy forests. The Bruneau River canyon shocked us all with its stark contrast from the surrounding sage-filled plains. The river wound its way through tight canyon walls, which meant very little visibility ahead and, in turn, lots of quick decisions. It was especially exciting because none of us had been on the Bruneau before. There were plenty of Class IV rapids to keep us on our toes. Everything went perfectly though, which bodes well for our upcoming season. We can't wait to see you here in Stanley!

Stanley Idaho Weather and Salmon River Conditions

May 8, 2008 River Conditions update for Idaho's Salmon River:

River Runners Rejoice..... an abundant snow pack mixed with colder than normal spring temps will guarantee great flows for the Sunbeam Section of the Salmon River all summer long. The long-term forecast is calling for a warm-up next week just in time for Memorial Day Weekend, the unofficial opening day for river rafting in Stanley.
We will continue to watch conditions and update the blog as we approach the beginning of the 08' rafting season. Keep tuned for high water announcements, big water updates and images and up-to-date info about kayak flows on both Little Redfish Creek and the Yankee Fork.
Let the games begin!
Hope to see you on the river.....

Randy Hess, An Idaho Rafting Pioneer

Rest in Peace Randy. Randy Hess, a fellow outfitter on the Upper Salmon passed away this week. He owned White Otter Outdoor Adventures for the past 30 years.

He will be dearly missed by Roni and I.

Roni is having a very hard time with this news. Randy was her favorite person in Stanley, she looked forward to seeing him every summer. She will miss their chats, joking and referring to her as his Stanley girlfriend. Randy's support and generosity to her during her difficult battle with a back injury will not be forgotten. She always felt he was one of the few people who understood her and what she was going through. She is doing much better and recovering, part of this is due to Randy's love and support.

As for me, I have lost a great friend and mentor. Randy was a pioneer in the Stanley rafting community, and his void will never be filled. Though we were competitors, I always looked at Randy as more of a partner. Thank you for taking me under your wing and teaching me the ins and outs of the rafting business in Stanley. I will miss our dinners at Redfish were we would talk about life, business, employees, politics………..Randy always supported me and my business from the beginning; I truly appreciated that, and will not forget it. Randy's help and knowledge last season with the 358 person trip was priceless. I am a better person, businessman, employer, boater, and friend for having the opportunity of knowing and spending time with Randy.

Randy spent more time rafting on the Upper Salmon than any other person in history. I will be creating a memorial along the river in Randy's honor. I plan to formally name a rapid after Randy in hopes that you will watch over the river, keep us safe and never be forgotten.

Thanks for living the life you lived, rest in peace Randy.

IDAHO SNOWPACK!!!!!!

Hold on to your hats, tighten your life jackets, and hang on! We are going to have a gooooood water year! Of course, no one should predict the weather except God and fools (and that goes double for Stanley, Idaho weather), but things are looking great. Right now at the end of January, we are sitting at 125% of a normal snowpack. That's a lot. I don't know about you, but I'm excited. On the daystretch, we will be running our High Adventure trips for quite a while. Plus, our multi day wilderness adventure vacations on the Main Salmon will have lots of water and lots of fun. Are you ready for summertime fun? I know I am.
